Kia pai te kotahi - Better Together!

Collaboration is a key which unlocks many, many doors. 

Everyone has something to add - hearts and minds are important and add such value to making a difference to the enabling and empowering of every invested agency to be the best that they can be!

We rise by working together...time is precious, waste it wisely!


Wonderings...
Using my previous inquiry wonderings and findings...

If we are willing to let go of the lesson we have planned, 
so as to have the lesson that is waiting for us

When given the choice between being right or being kind, 
we actually choose kind

If we can be the change we want to see in the world

If when an opportunity doesn't knock, 
do we build a door

If education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learnt in school

If respect is earned, honesty is appreciated, trust is gained and loyalty is returned

If we do what we've always done, 
we'll get what we've always gotten

If success is stumbling from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm

If anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new

If perseverance actually gains honour

I WONDER IF EVERY CHILD HAS A CHAMPION, A MAGIC WEAVER,  
AN UNCONDITIONAL CONSTANT WHO NEVER GIVES UP ON THEM, 
WHO UNDERSTANDS THE POWER OF A CONNECTION 
AND INSISTS THAT THEY BECOME THE BEST THAT THEY CAN BE...
THEY ACTUALLY WILL!

Visible Teaching and Learning



A Google site is where learning is visible and accessible to start the term. Through a combination of in class support, Toolkits and guidance from your school there will be support to develop a site.

A class site is a portal to learning; it needs to be enticing and user friendly. Personalising it, using buttons for specific subject areas and visuals to support the visible teaching and learning are essential to achieve a professional outcome.

The pedagogy, processes and procedures that have been identified to best support the goals of Manaiakalani and contribute to enabling our schools to improve learning outcomes for our young people. To support the Learn, Create, Share pedagogy in 1:1 iPad Junior classrooms there is a work flow to support the process.



HC Notes:

  • Kawa of care - teach and repeat, teach and repeat
  • Whole class > Independent work - model then co-construct success criteria
  • Photos - initial exposure to iPad and EE
  • Play with tools - 
  • Use correct language - duplicate, shutter, copy
  • 15 pages max (think about uploading)
  • Save as video to students drive
  • Animation (scalpel)
  • Structure, with clear expectations, produces 
  • Getting it wrong, proves that we are all learners and creates a new Learning Intention
  • Collaborate - don't reinvent the wheel; sharing is caring
  • Capture the non-digital to make it digital  - everything and anything is possible!

Summer Learning Journey

All too often, students leave school at the end of the year and don’t practice their reading or writing much over the summer holiday. When they return to school they struggle to remember what they learned the year before. To avoid this ‘summer slide’ or ‘slump’ in learning, staff at the Woolf Fisher Research Centre designed a fun and educational digital blogging programme called a Summer Learning Journey. The programme has been highly successful, significantly raising reading and writing scores for those students who participate. And each year since 2015, the number of schools and students has grown. The popularity of the Summer Learning Journey programme has even led to the development of a Winter Learning Journey which ran in 2016 and 2017.
The programme is now in its fifth iteration, with another version of Summer Learning Journey being launched in December 2017 across six clusters of schools around the country. Soon, we will be set to go nationwide!


History 
The programme was first piloted at three Maniakalani cluster schools to provide students with an opportunity to practice their reading and writing over the holiday period. The theme of the programme was travel and adventure.
Students from Pt England, Tamaki Primary and Panmure Bridge schools logged onto the Summer Learning Journey site, learned about the people, customs and cultures in other countries, created learning outputs and then shared them on their blogs. At the end of the summer our students had completed 261 posts and provided 43 comments on one another’s blogs.
Not only did the students produce posts that had a high degree of fluency and accuracy (i.e. correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar), but they also reported significantly higher scores on their standardised (e-asTTle) writing tests in Term I of 2016 after completing the programme.

Google Certified Educator - Level 1 - ACHIEVED


Level 1:
The Level 1 Google Certified Educator status indicates that an educator can “successfully implement Google for Education into their teaching practice to enhance teaching and learning.”  This certification is for educators with a basic understanding of the core features of G Suite as well as well as an understanding of how to meaningfully use technology in the classroom.

2019: New Beginnings, new chapters, new wonderings...


2019 sees a new beginning in my teaching career and a change of direction into the Manaiakalani Education Trust as a PLD facilitator across 13 schools within the Tamaki region.   Leaving my magic mantra of "...be the best that you can be..." I accepted an  exciting opportunity to spread my net further afield and make an educational difference on a MUCH bigger scale!
